How's your week been? Mine's been long.

I've been thinking about, discussing, and working on Sonlight's Core programs, Instructor's Guides, Social Media, the Sonlight® Catalog, website, and more. Sweet updates and improvements are coming.

We just have much work to do to get there.

Please continue to pray for us that we would have wisdom and endurance as we continue to work toward April 2, 2012. Thank you!

What have you been up to?

Oooh. Exciting stuff! I do hope that the new catalog will come with all the book descriptions and details like reading level/read aloud levels like previous years'. I ended up using the catalog from the year before as the most recent one's lack of book descriptions was confusing. So looking forward to the next catalog tho! Always love browsing through and reading all the testimonies and seeing the family shots. :-) praying for strength for you all.

  2. I always look forward to the new catalogues. :)

Thank you ALL for the hard work that goes on behind the scenes there. I know it must be VERY busy there. :)

  3. Hey, Luke,
As a former Sonlight mom/forum addict and current ps teacher, I couldn't help thinking how Sonlight parents would benefit from an educational resource I now have access to. Actually, it's more of a way to organize resources. I know in my hsing years, I relied heavily on the SL forum to get ideas and end resources; in the district I work for now we have a collaborative Wiki (I think that's the term) that is linked to the district objective calendar. Teachers subscribe to particular grades and subjects, which appear on a calendar (ICal); from the calendar, we click on whatever objective we want information on and it takes us to a page that has links to teacher-posted power points, worksheets, videos, etc... not surprisingly, the name of this resource system is "Beyond Textbooks."

I can't help imagining how something like this could work for Sonlight parents. A mom could subscribe to the resource calendar for whatever cores her children are using, and be able to click on "Day 35" of Core 4 History or Science 3 to find a wealth of resources posted by other moms that are specific to the objectives of that day. It would be like the forums, only quicker and easier because you wouldn't have to run a search and wade through the social chatty stuff to get to something you needed.

Granted, it takes a lot of work to get something like that up and running, and there would probably be copyright issues to work out, but if there's some way you guys could pull it off, it would be incredibly helpful.

A slightly more cumbersome but still helpful way to share material would be core-specific blogs, with a moderator who could have posts for each curriculum day and upload appropriate submissions.

As an example of some things that parents could create and share, here is my class blog, with pdfs of some power points and activities I've made for my students, plus links to other resources:

Anyway, it's an idea you might keep in mind for the future. Sonlight is the most impacting educational experience I or my children have had, and we have been forever blessed by the efforts of everyone at the company, from forum moderators to curriculum writers to box packers and phone answerers. Thank you for all your hard work!!!

  4. Glad you're all excited for the new catalog <smile>.

Thanks for the idea, Jeanne! We have a few things a bit like that in the IG Links mentioned in your Instructor's Guides as well as the Core Tips CDs. And, yes, such lists are quite a bit of work to maintain. I'll keep this suggestion in mind as we continue to consider the digital revolution sweeping through literature and education. I appreciate your thoughts!
