I came across an interesting article the other day, and was surprised to learn that Home Schooling is Going Mainstream! I will be graduating my third homeschooled student next spring and it's nice to know we're finally part of the mainstream ... whatever that means.
I do think that the author of the article could have taken a bit of time to do some more recent research. Using 13 year old numbers is not terribly impressive. A statistical analysis done by the National Center for Education Statistics shows a more recent study (2003) that seems to prove that homeschooling continues to grow in popularity. HSLDA hosted a study of over 11,000 families as recently as 2009.
What struck me most about the article is the continued insistence that Critics of home schools have said that homeschooled kids miss out on learning things like how to get along with peers, tolerate differences and make new friends. With the overwhelming success homeschooling demonstrates, and the increasing number of families home educating their children, it would seem that the socialization argument would eventually die.
Nothing more profound than that to share today. I'm always intrigued when mainstream media writes to let me know that one of my lifestyle choices is gaining popularity!
Still on the journey,
